Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation (EMBR) Group

Group leader: Dr. Sohail Yousaf

Introduction: Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation (EMBR) is working for development of novel bioremediation and phytoremediation methods for the treatment of contaminated soils and water.

Bioremediation: The focus is on the remediation following environmental pollutants.

  1. . Heavy metals
  2. . Organic pollutants (Hydrocarbons, PAHs, PCBs, Pesticides)
  3. . Textile dyes and effluents
  4. . Waste management
  5. . Wastewater treatments
  6. . Emerging pollutants

Biofertilizers: We are also working on the production of biofertilizers to increase the yield of crops. Biofertilizers are substances that contain microbes, which help in promoting the growth of plants and trees by increasing the supply of essential nutrients to the plants. It comprises living organisms which include mycorrhizal fungi, blue-green algae, and bacteria. The production of compost from agriculture/kitchen waste is also performed.
